This would be really nice to have. For certain AD groups and mailing lists, I would like to use the 'Managed By' field as a way to set the approver. This could be checked via powershell script.

Eemil: Using the current features you are able to make this work via a custom PowerShell script and HelloID API.
Create a local HelloID group per AD group and make the AD 'managed By' member of the HelloID group. Set the new HelloID group as resource owner of the product and use the resource owner in the approval workflow.
If this feature request will be implemented (not sure if we will do), you kind of need to build the same logic in a custom PowerShell script as mentioned above. For your use case this feature request will not add much more value compared to the existing possibilities.

For AD Groups = Fileshare Permission we would need the AD Group Manager as approver.
Because a few file shares are not only for the department were the requester is located.
It´s more a function based fileshare, were the users are located in different locations.
So only the Fileshare Owner (AD Group Manager) should decide, if the requester is permitted to access the folder.

Option to find eligable approver up the chain of command

We have the need for business unit managers to approve various products. The business unit managers can be the direct manager of the requester but can also be the manager of the requesters' manager and so on. Therefore we'd like to be able to create an approval workflow that will search up the chain of command until it finds a manager that sits in a specific group (in our case, the Business Unit Managers group.

Maybe via a data source? Whatever makes sense within the architecture.
